Naturally black ammonite, Peru
A very unusual naturally black fossil ammonite from Ancash, Peru. It is mounted on a wood base with a readable "brass" label.
Ammonites are extinct relatives of modern day nautiloids and squid. The largest known ammonite in the world would have been 8 1/2 feet (2.59 metres) across if it were complete, so although this is a fairly large piece in 1:12 scale it is entirely appropriate.
1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) deep and 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) tall.
