| The lighted specimens are mounted on black bases. They will work with standard 12V
lighting systems or can be simply connected to a battery. A 9V battery works very well. The expected
life of the LED is 50,000 hours, so it should never need replacing, and it generates minimal heat.
The wires come bared at the end for easy wiring into a miniature plug or directly as you wish. |
 |
| The wooden bases for the other specimens are black walnut, and all labels are readable. |

This is a dramatic piece of Mexican opal on a sandy coloured
matrix. The photograph does not really show the rainbow opal colours and sparkle
that emerge from the milky opal. The black stone slab accentuates the piece.
The piece is in 1:12 scale, measuring 1 & 3/8 inch (3.49 cm) wide, 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) deep
and 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) high.

A simple cluster of smokey quartz crystals & brookite from Magnet Cove, Arkansas.
The piece is in 1:12 scale, measuring 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) wide, 7/16 inch (1.1 cm)

A lovely clear apophyllite crystal from the Jalgaon District in India. It is naturally
faceted in a roughly pyramidal shape. I have mounted it on a slab of sagenite agate in warm brown colours, which you
can see reflected in the crystal.
The piece is in 1:12 scale, measuring 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) wide, 5/8 inch (1.6 cm)
deep and just over 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) high.

This is an unusual form of copper, in which it takes a rather knobbly
branch-like structure, hence the name arborescent copper. The form does occur naturally but this specimen
was actually formed when there was a short circuit during the process of copper plating.
The "brass" name plate is readable.
The piece is in 1:12 scale, measuring 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) wide, 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) deep and 3/8 inch (0.95 cm) high.

A fascinating naturally occuring form of azurite.
It really does have an almost spherical shape. This is from San Juan County,
Utah, and is mounted on a black stone slab.
It is in 1:12 scale, measuring just under 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide,
3/8 inch (.95 cm) deep and 3/8 inch (0.95 cm) high.

I have mounted it on a slab of light green amazonite.
The piece is in 1:12 scale, measuring 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) wide, 3/8 inch (.95 cm)
deep and 3/8 inch (.95 cm) high.

A crystal of "diamond" quartz from Pakistan mounted on a black stone base.
The light really reflects off its faces.
It is in 1:12 scale, measuring 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) wide, 1/2 inch (1.3 cm)

A dramatic specimen of crystalline bismuth. The colours are
irridescent blues with a touch of purple on silver. To me it is fascinating as a
mineral, but the angular geometry also makes it look like a piece of modern art.
I have carefully selected a crystal that is intricate enough to work well in 1:12
scale and mounted it on a mirror base.
Bismuth is a metallic element that rarely occurs naturally in its pure state.
These crystals are grown in the US under controlled conditions in a kiln and are
actually bright silver, but when cooled relatively quickly the crystal surfaces
oxidize, and produce the wonderful irridesence that is so striking and attractive.
The piece is in 1:12 scale, measuring just over 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide, 1/2 inch
(1.3 cm) deep and just over 3/8 inch (.95 cm) high.

deep and 5/16 inch (0.8 cm) high.
