| Hello! My name is Wendy Smale. I'm English but live in Ohio, USA. I have always
been fascinated by tiny things; I still have my collection of tiny fossils that I found as a child.
In 2000 whilst living in New Jersey I discovered a nearby miniatures shop and then visited the Philadelphia Miniaturia show.
That really opened my eyes to miniatures as incredibly detailed and well made items.
While I dabble in making various kinds of miniatures I have discovered that I really
enjoy working with fabric, particularly pure silk. I found a small piece of gorgeous silk and
wanted to make something with it, so I made a pillow (cushion, in English English!). That first
pillow was okay, but I soon worked out how to improve it, and then to add various trims.
My pillows have come a long way since that first attempt.
I don't like being photographed, but thought that a photo of most of my workspace might be of more interest anyway.
Note the nine boxes of silk under the table! (There is more in drawers too). |
The pillows themselves
The colours, designs and sheen of the fabrics are what inspire me, and I almost always
work with pure silk. If I use a different fabric I will note that in the pillow description.
I stitch rather than glue each pillow and its trim, so you will not see
blobs or trails of glue, even under magnification. Each pillow is made individually with careful
attention to the characteristics of the fabric and design, and the trim sits right.
The filling
I use an innovative pillow filling that gives a
"squishy" rather than overstuffed feel, as well as a realistic sense of weight. This filling will not degrade over time, is not affected by heat or humidity, will not attract bugs and will
not damage the fabric. In other words, it is better than salt, sand, rice or silica gel, which are often used
as miniature pillow fillings.
It is a shame that internet technology cannot give you a "feel" of the pillows, as this is a
feature that customers repeatedly comment on. I have actually watched people gently handling the pillows
and turning them over and over in their fingers, almost like worry beads.
The tassels
The tassels that I make are, I believe, unique in that they are truly floppy, so they fall naturally without
having to be glued in place. This means that the pillows can easily be moved, rearranged, or changed as you
re-decorate your miniature setting.
